Throughout this semester, we have examined stories of the past, present, and future. We began by examining our own “Personal Lens” by creating a memoir, then by exploring the power of storytelling to combat silence in "Night" and to uncover stories in our original podcasts. Now, we have concluded the semester by examining stories of the future. We read "The Martian" and analyzed a series of dystopian short stories; we examined critical poems about contemporary issues, watched short science fiction films, and explored the dangers of technological dependency, global warming, social media, and genetic modification. We traveled to Joshua Tree, created original propaganda pieces, and concluded our unit by writing original dystopian short stories. For my dystopia short story, I chose the topic on human genetic modification. I then created a story about a young girl living in society with unwanted enhancements and the segregation between modified humans and non-modified.
