In order to make my own version of the coin drop experiment, I looked for heavy weighted objects, a flat surface, and a thin sheet of paper or something similar to use as my paper replacement. In the end I found that a candle was heavy enough to use on its own, I’d previously tried using a small snowman figurine but due to its small stature, it didn’t provide enough weight. If the object I was using to provide resistance didn’t weigh enough, it wouldn’t be able to provide enough against the paper towel I was using. This experiment is a good example of inertia because as defined online, it is a property of matter that exists in an state of rest or uniform motion while remaining in a straight line. If the paper towel is pulled slowly, the candle will move along with it, create a property of matter that exists in a state of uniform motion. If you pull the paper towel fast enough, the candle exists in a state of rest as the candle provides enough resistance from being moved by the towel. This project helped me understand more about inertia.

In order to make arches out of random objects, you’ll need to evenly distribute the weight on either side so it can be balanced. In order for you arch to work, it’ll also need to pass a test where you make sure when mirrored, it looks a chain. This is why the test is called the Chain Test. When making an arch, you need to have a keystone so all the weight of the pieces that come from the sides of the arch, stay standing up. The supports end up leaning on each in a way and the keystone keeps the weight balanced and makes sure the arch doesn’t collapse in on itself. You can use your own materials from home to make arches. Books tend to be one of the easier objects to make arches out of but a variety of things could work such as pillows. Through this project, I was able to understand how physics work in keeping things upright and steady.
To make this project, I had to choose a moment in time that in some way connected to me. I chose the moment when a certain device was created called a Phenakistoscope, which is one of the first devices to be considered as the first mechanism for true animation. I chose this moment because I myself am interested greatly in animation. To make this poster, I first came up with a draft. It consisted of a small blurb of what the moment was about and the year it was created as well as an image. I at the time, didn’t really know what image to choose. I wanted to show many wheels on my poster of the different types of animation that could be drawn on the devices. In the end I chose an image of a man using the mechanism that way the view could get a feel of how it worked. I also organized the text in this was so I could have the paragraph with the equation larger and put more focus on it. I had to find different science terms to explain how the Phenakistoscope worked and I had only thought of acceleration. Then through critique I was able to find other terms.
Through this project I was able to explain how this device worked by using science terms and how to create an educational poster. |
